The title for this exhibition, ‘Infinity’, represents a space without bounds, which continues on forever. The pioneer of contemporary art, Marcel Duchamp (1887-1968), abandoned oil painting at an early age to create a series of works which strongly criticized the existing concept of art. After Duchamp, artists looked for new methods of expression not limited to the canvas, but looked towards sculptures or film, installations (expressions of space), performance (expressions of the body). These avant-garde attempts influenced genre to revolutionize contemporary music, performance, poetry, and saw many new works of art which resisted labels. Contemporary art uses all five senses to subvert traditional expectations, and expands our imaginations to show the possibilities of the infinite.
