Japanese Painting Workshop

Japanese Painting Workshop: [Paint Made from Crushed Gems]

I held a workshop where participants ground raw azurite ore—the source of Japanese painting’s signature blue—into mineral pigments.
The session began with each participant selecting their own stone from a variety of raw azurite specimens.
Since it’s a natural stone, everyone ended up with slightly different shades of ultramarine blue.

Participants then created mini paintings using their handmade rock pigments.
Motifs included auspicious symbols like horses (for next year’s zodiac sign), Mount Fuji, and pine, bamboo, and plum blossoms.
May these pieces brighten your New Year celebrations!

I was delighted to see everyone smiling and enjoying themselves throughout the workshop.
